Dining Experience
Eating out at restaurants has never been an integral part of my life as someone with many food allergies, including peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, gluten, all seeds, legumes, and eggs. However, the one type of restaurant that has been the most successful for me is a steak restaurant.
Gallaghers Steakhouse, in midtown Manhattan, is run by an incredibly understanding group of people that greeted me with great care. I had the honor of speaking to the chef, Chef Bobby, about how Gallaghers handles food allergies. The system they use to keep people with food allergies safe is by using a ticket system where if a customer has a food allergy, it is listed on the ticket that has the foods the person ordered and is then given to the servers and cooks so that they are aware of the customer’s allergies when the meal is being cooked and while it is being served.
With regards to foods, they offer many plain sides, such as steamed broccoli, which eliminates the fear of cross-contact for diners with food allergies, including myself. Similarly, the steak oven is completely free of cross-contact, containing only steaks with no additions or sauces, which provides the comfort for diners of knowing that their steak will be exactly how they want it.
When calling to make a reservation at Gallaghers Steakhouse, make sure to mention your allergies ahead of time to make sure that the staff is aware and prepared for you to come! They will welcome you and I hope you enjoy your visit!
